On June 26, 2024, the Friends of Saint Mary MacKillop Inc. (FSMMI) officially launched an inspiring project—Journey to Literacy. The event was attended by key stakeholders and the ever-dedicated FSMMI volunteers who have committed their time and energy to making a lasting impact in the lives of children in remote communities.

Bridging Learning Gaps in Siayan's Remote Areas

The Journey to Literacy initiative is more than just an educational program. It is a mission to bridge the learning gaps faced by children in the remotest parts of Siayan, Zamboanga del Norte, particularly the Subanen Tribe. With limited access to formal education and learning materials, many of these young learners struggle to keep up with basic literacy and numeracy skills, leaving them at a disadvantage in their academic journey.

Reaching the Unreached

Every Saturday, the program sends out dedicated volunteers to 10 barangays located in the highlands of Siayan. These volunteers climb rugged mountains and cross difficult terrains to reach the far-flung communities, ensuring that no child is left behind. The tutorial services provided are designed to meet the unique needs of these learners, offering personalized attention and support in a way that traditional classrooms may not be able to.

The Journey to Literacy isn't just about teaching—it’s about empowering. By providing these tutorial services, FSMMI aims to spark curiosity, cultivate a love for learning, and give these children the tools they need to succeed in their studies and beyond.

A Community Effort

The program’s success is largely attributed to the collaborative efforts of the stakeholders, including local leaders, educators, and volunteers, who have shown unwavering support for the project. The dedication of FSMMI volunteers, who tirelessly visit these 10 barangays every week, is truly commendable. They serve as mentors, educators, and role models, offering both academic and moral support to the children they meet.

Looking Ahead

As Journey to Literacy continues, the program aims to reach even more communities and extend its services to additional barangays. FSMMI’s commitment to education reflects its belief in the transformative power of learning, and through this initiative, they hope to create lasting change in the lives of children who need it most.

With each session, every Saturday, FSMMI’s volunteers are not just teaching lessons—they are planting seeds of hope, knowledge, and empowerment, helping these children dream bigger and achieve more.
